Van Gogh’s “Vase with Poppies” - A Stolen Masterpiece

Vincent van Gogh’s Vase with Poppies (also known as Vase with Lychnis or Vase with Flowers), painted around 1887, is a vibrant still life showing red and yellow flowers in a vase. The painting was part of the collection at the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum in Cairo.

Unfortunately, the artwork has been stolen multiple times. It was first taken in 1977 and later recovered, only to be stolen again in August 2010. Reports indicate that security at the museum was inadequate, with cameras malfunctioning during the heist. Since that second theft, the painting has not been recovered and its current whereabouts remain unknown.

This case is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of cultural treasures - even masterpieces by artists like Van Gogh - and resonates strongly with recent high-profile art heists, such as the one at the Louvre.
